SSJ-TOSF join hands in peaceful protest

SSJ-TOSF Social Justice Director Katie Varatta and SSJ-TOSF Central Board member Sr. Dorothy Pagosa recently took part in the School of the Americas Watch vigil in Ft. Benning, Ga.

Varatta works at the 8th Day Center for Justice in Chicago, and Pagosa is on the Central Board leadership team for the SSJ-TOSF. 8th Day helped organize the bus trip from Chicago, which included student volunteers from the center.

Thousands of college students and others attend the SOAW vigil in November every year, Varatta said. Over the course of the weekend, many speakers, singers and bands share stories and songs. Puppetistas – a group of artists that create life-sized puppets – presented stories of the Latin American people. One story depicted the recent coup in Honduras and resistance occurring there, she said. Former torture victims also spoke at the vigil, which honored those who have died.
