Sisters attend USCCB Convocation of Catholic Leaders: The Joy of the Gospel in America

Over the 4th of July weekend, Sisters Sharon Dillon and Caroline Cerveny participated in a first-time event convened by the bishops of the United States. This gathering invited Catholic leaders to come together and reflect on Pope Francis' Apostolic Exhortation Joy of the Gospel.

What was this convocation about? A few reflections from our bishops:

  • "Pope Francis' challenge is also an invitation - an invitation to know Christ more deeply and to invite others to encounter Him. We are all called to be missionary disciples and to form missionary disciples." – Most Rev. Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States

  • "Today we are grateful for the witness of our Holy Father Pope Francis and for his encouragement to the whole Church to continue on the way of conversion and renewed witness to the joy of the Gospel, a way so well modeled and proclaimed by his predecessors and the Second Vatican Council." – Daniel Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, President, USCCB

  • "We are called to be light of the world. It is precisely this call which illumines our discipleship that the power of the Gospel might shine forth in our daily social and family life." – Most Reverend John G. Noonan, Bishop of Orlando

For Sister Caroline, pictured at left with Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the best part of the convocation was experiencing how a Jesuit Pope who has taken the name of Francis is calling all of us to renew our wonderful church by reaching out to the poor and suffering.

Sister Sharon was able to attend all of the breakout sessions regarding vocation and formation issues. She was hopeful that she could help shift the dialogue that vocations are in the decline when in fact the most recent CARA study shows a slow and steady rise in vocations in the US during the past five years. She was thrilled to be able to network with several other Catholic leaders involved in vocation ministry. Sister Sharon is pictured at left with Cardinal Joseph Tobin.
