Sponsored Institutions

The ministry of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis welcomes all of God's people as sisters and brothers. It is for this reason that sponsorship of institutions by the Congregation has long been established as an expression of mission. In a spirit of collaboration, sponsorship channels, extends and strengthens ministry. Sponsorship provides a strong base to serve unmet needs, to influence public policy, to share and teach Gospel values and to influence and effect needed change. The Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis have five sponsored Institutions and one Partnership Ministry:

Trinity High School: Garfield Heights, Ohio
(Originally called St. Joseph Academy then Marymount High School)

Regina High School: Warren, Michigan

Bartlett Learning Center, Inc.: Bartlett, Illinois
(Clare Woods Academy and Cupertino Home)

In the 1930's, the mission of the congregation was broadened to include health care ministry in response to the growing need for Catholic health care facilities. The congregation owned and operated sanitariums, hospitals, and nursing homes. Today Marymount Hospital in Garfield Heights, Ohio, founded in 1949 and the only hospital facility still sponsored by the congregation, is now one of the regional hospitals in Cleveland Clinic's health care system.

Marymount Health Care Systems, Inc., serves as a special member of Marymount Hospital, and is the parent company of The Village at Marymount. In recent years the community has expanded its health care ministry to senior care facilities. Today The Village at Marymount in Garfield Heights, Ohio, provides independent and assisted living, and long term, memory and skilled care.

Clare Oaks in Bartlett, Illinois is a continuing care senior community which provides independent cottages and apartments and assisted memory care and skilled care beds.

In the 1970s, a number of the Congregation's institutions were sold or transferred to local organizations for continued operation. Other institutions the Congregation continued to sponsor were separately incorporated and began to function under the direction of Boards of Trustees/Directors.

Changes continued for the community and in 1990 one centralized governance structure replaced the former three provinces and two regions. Central Service Offices were relocated to Stevens Point, Wisconsin, and the convent there is once again known as St. Joseph Motherhouse.

The Congregation continues to be involved in ministries where witness to Gospel values furthers the mission of Jesus and our Franciscan heritage and fulfills the original commitments of the Sisters of St. Joseph of the Third Order of St. Francis. The needs of the Church and the people who are served still guide the ministry choices and development of new ventures in ministry.
